Sale hold off Saracens 21–17 for first league win despite Vermeulen red card
Sale beat Saracens 21–17 at StoneX despite Jacques Vermeulen’s 20-minute red card. Three tries and all three conversions delivered their first league win.

Sale Sharks earned their first win of the Gallagher PREM season with a 21–17 victory at Saracens on Sunday 4 October 2026, overcoming a spell with only 13 players at StoneX Stadium. Nathan Jibulu, Tom O’Flaherty and Ben Bamber scored Sale’s tries as the visitors responded to their opening-weekend defeat by Bristol.
Jacques Vermeulen’s first-half 20-minute red card, following Alex Lozowski’s yellow, gave Saracens an opportunity to take control. Instead, Sale reached half-time 7–5 ahead and produced two decisive attacking moments after the interval before defending a four-point lead through the finish.
A lead preserved through the cards
Jibulu put Sale ahead from a driving maul, with George Ford converting. Lozowski was then sent to the sin-bin for a high tackle on Alfie Barbeary, and Vermeulen received the 20-minute red for his challenge on Tomos Williams. The overlap between those sanctions temporarily reduced the visitors to 13.
A potential Saracens response through Nick Tompkins was ruled out for obstruction in the build-up. Eroni Mawi eventually crossed for the home side, but the conversion was missed. The narrow half-time lead reflected Sale’s ability to limit the damage while short of players.
O’Flaherty and Bamber create breathing room
Early in the second half, O’Flaherty gathered Ford’s high kick and broke through to score. Ford’s conversion made it 14–5. Saracens replied through Sione Va’enuku, keeping the contest close rather than allowing Sale to turn the advantage into a comfortable afternoon.
Bamber’s try, set up by Ford, gave the visitors another important cushion. Lozowski converted to make it 21–10. Charlie Bracken then combined with his brother Jack to score for Saracens, and Fergus Burke’s conversion brought the hosts within four points. Sale prevented a final reversal and left with the win.
Where the four-point difference came from
| Scoring | Saracens | Sale Sharks |
|---|---|---|
| Tries | 3 | 3 |
| Successful conversions | 1 | 3 |
| Half-time score | 5 | 7 |
| Final score | 17 | 21 |
Ford converted Sale’s first two tries and Lozowski added the third conversion. Saracens scored through Mawi, Va’enuku and Charlie Bracken, with Burke adding the conversion to the last of those tries. The identical try counts underline the value of Sale’s finishing from the tee as well as their defence.
A timely response for Sale
For Sale supporters, the result offers an immediate response to the Bristol loss. The club’s report highlights the defensive effort and the significance of winning away at a ground where recent visits had been difficult. BBC Sport’s analysis also stresses the physical work of the forwards and Ford’s management of the closing stages.
The next task is to turn that away performance into consistency. Sale’s club report lists a home meeting with Harlequins on Sunday 11 October at the CorpAcq Stadium. That is the next scheduled fixture, rather than a result or a guarantee that the momentum will continue.
