Stafford’s £15.3m breast care unit formally opens, with more tests closer to home
County Hospital marks the formal opening of its £15.3m breast care unit, already seeing patients since April, with more diagnostics available in Stafford.

Stafford’s £15.3 million Breast Care Unit at County Hospital has marked its formal opening, bringing breast imaging, diagnostics, outpatient clinics and support into one building. Former patients and community representatives opened the facility on Monday 5 October, University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) said in its 6 October announcement.
The ceremony follows months of clinical use: the unit began welcoming patients in April. It should therefore be understood as a formal opening of an operating service, rather than the start of appointments this week.
What it changes for Staffordshire patients
UHNM says the diagnostic equipment allows more tests at County Hospital, reducing the need for some patients to travel to Royal Stoke University Hospital. For people in Stafford and the surrounding area, the practical benefit is the possibility of more care locally, with consultations, imaging and support in the same setting.
In its April report on the first patient, the trust explained that the previous unit had become too small for modern breast services. Clinical teams helped design the replacement to improve privacy and patient flow, and reduce movement between different parts of the hospital. These are the trust’s stated aims; the opening announcement does not provide measured changes in waiting times or the number of journeys avoided.
Rooms and services under one roof
BBC Stoke & Staffordshire’s report, carried by AOL, also confirmed the April start and the facilities listed below. These are room counts, rather than appointment capacity.
| Facility | Rooms |
|---|---|
| Consultation | 4 |
| Counselling | 3 |
| Mammography | 2 |
| Ultrasound | 2 |
| Enhanced treatment room | 1 |
Patients helped shape the building
UHNM says patient representatives and community groups took part in the design process, focusing on accessibility and navigation. The formal opening included former patients and a representative of Thomas Pocklington Trust, whose work supports blind and partially sighted people.
The trust presents the new layout as a calmer, more accessible setting for breast care. Its next test for local patients is how those facilities translate into day-to-day appointments and support.
