Torcross coastal defence construction begins on £19.8m scheme
New rock armour is planned to reduce wave energy along the Torcross shoreline. The first barge delivery is expected next week, subject to weather. Installation runs to April 2027; the car park is expected to reopen in early summer.

The Environment Agency announced on 14 October that construction can begin on a £19.8 million coastal defence scheme at Torcross, following storm damage earlier this year.
Rock arrivals and shoreline works
Almost 90,000 tonnes of rock armour will help reduce wave energy reaching the shore. The scheme also repairs car park defences and extends the slipway. The first barge delivery is expected next week, weather permitting, with further material arriving by road.
Indicative timetable
Sea deliveries are scheduled from mid-October to early December, while road deliveries continue to the end of January 2027. Rock installation is planned through April 2027. Slipway and car park work follows in spring, with completion and reopening expected in early summer. Weather and operational conditions may change these dates.
Funding comes from the Environment Agency’s existing flood and coastal defence programme. It is separate from funding for the A379 road, which is Devon County Council’s responsibility.
