Four Barnsley AI training projects awarded more than £800,000
The funded schemes will take practical training into care settings, construction firms and small businesses, with support for women returning to work and young people.

Four organisations have been awarded more than £800,000 to deliver AI training in Barnsley, with projects aimed at care staff, construction workers, small businesses and people returning to employment. The government announced the awards on Tuesday, 3 November, through its AI Upskilling Challenge Fund.
The funding is divided between four delivery partners:
- Atheni Strategy Limited receives £231,000 to help 140 people across six manufacturing, engineering and construction firms. Most participants will be aged 40 or over. Training will use each company’s documents and working context to help with tasks such as quotations, tenders and safety paperwork.
- Optimise Cyber Solutions Limited receives £200,000. Working with Abbeydale Training, it plans to help 20 small businesses use AI safely and put it to work in everyday operations.
- Fossu Limited receives £195,188 for programmes and buildathons for 100 residents, including women returning to work and young people. Partners include Barnsley YMCA, Postnatal Minds and Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce. Participants will work on challenges set by local employers and community groups.
- Barnsley College receives £184,403 to take mobile AI training units to health and social care staff and the wider community. Its practical introductory sessions are intended to fit around people’s working lives.
The awards are part of Barnsley Tech Town, a government-backed initiative announced on 3 February 2026. The pilots will test ways of teaching workplace AI skills that could later be used elsewhere in Britain.
The participant numbers describe the projects’ planned reach. The announcement does not report completed training or measured productivity gains from these four schemes.
