Travellers planning a half-term break on England’s south coast should check their rail connections: buses will replace trains between Tonbridge and Wadhurst from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November 2026. Southeastern’s notice says the closure extends to Battle on the final Sunday. This is a closure of a section of the Hastings line, rather than an announcement that Hastings station or every route to the town will shut.

The dates that matter

Why trains are being replaced

National Rail’s project summary confirms the nine-day closure. The main job is renewal of worn slab track in Grove Hill Tunnel, south of Tunbridge Wells. Slab track sits on a concrete base; the work replaces the old track and restores railway systems. Other maintenance and inspections will also take place while the line is closed.

Plan the journey, not just the train

Southeastern says passengers needing assistance should book it in the usual way. Parking availability is also expected to be affected at several stations used for works or bus operations. Check your specific station rather than assuming you can park and board at the usual place.

For a day trip or overnight stay, build the plan from your actual departure point. Search both the outward and return journeys for the right date through National Rail or the operator’s engineering-work information. Confirm the bus boarding point and each connection before committing to a timed booking.

  • Allow room in the itinerary for transfers between rail and bus.
  • Check the return separately, particularly if travelling on 1 November.
  • Confirm accessibility or luggage requirements with the operator for the service you will use.
  • Recheck the dated timetable shortly before departure rather than relying on a saved screenshot.

The dates above describe the announced works. They do not establish a departure time for an individual service after the closure. The cover is an AI-assisted collage of a 2011 archive photograph and drawings; the photograph in this article remains unaltered.
